Who is Ilya Shapiro?
Why Should You Care?
What if someone told you that you have to buy size large seersucker pants?
But maybe you aren’t a large, maybe you don’t like seersucker, maybe you just don’t like being told what to do.
Now instead of pants, it’s healthcare and that someone is the United States government.
Is it really that different?
Does the government have the right and power to tell the American people they have to purchase a product from a private business?
Ilya Shapiro says, “NO!”
To back up his argument, Shapiro and leads the legal effort in filing briefs before the Supreme Court regarding the recent federal healthcare laws passed. Those briefs will be at the center of oral arguments expected to be heard on the matter before the Supreme Court this month.
You have a chance to hear his argument first!
On March 14, Caesar Rodney Institute will host Shapiro for an evening to talk about the constitutionality of the Obama backed healthcare law. Tickets are $100 and include a fabulous dinner at the Wilmington Country Club.
Who is Shapiro?
Let’s start by saying Ilya Shapiro has read the document. Shapiro is a senior fellow in constitutional studies at the Cato Institute and editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review, is one of the motivating forces behind many of the recent Supreme Court briefs filed on the issue of the healthcare law by Cato, the Pacific Legal Foundation and Caesar Rodney Institute. Before joining Cato, Shapiro was a special assistant/advisor to the Multi-National Force in Iraq on rule of law issues and practiced international, political, commercial, and antitrust litigation at Patton Boggs and Cleary Gottlieb.
He holds an A.B. from Princeton University, an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics, and a J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School. Shapiro is a member of the bars of New York, the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
